Amid the deepening political crisis in Rivers State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed a Military Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs following the declaration of a state of emergency. The appointment, however, has sparked intense controversy, as the newly assigned administrator is reportedly a close ally of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former governor of the state.
The political turmoil in Rivers escalated after Governor Siminalayi Fubara clashed with the state legislature, which remains largely loyal to Wike. The crisis intensified despite President Tinubu’s earlier intervention, which led to the reinstatement of sacked commissioners and a peace agreement between Fubara and Wike’s camp. However, tensions reached a breaking point when lawmakers loyal to Wike moved to further weaken Fubara’s administration, leading to security concerns in the state. Following these developments, Tinubu declared a state of emergency, citing the need to restore stability.
Political analysts argue that the appointment of a Wike-friendly Military Administrator raises questions about the federal government’s neutrality in the Rivers State conflict. The move has been seen as a direct attempt to sideline Governor Fubara, who has been at odds with Wike over governance issues. A top government official who spoke on the condition of anonymity stated: "The new military administrator is not just a neutral figure. He has strong ties to Wike, and this raises concerns about whether the federal government is truly acting in the best interest of Rivers people or simply reinforcing Wike’s control over the state."
Supporters of Governor Fubara have condemned the appointment, calling it an unconstitutional power grab aimed at frustrating the governor’s leadership. A key aide to Fubara stated: "This is a deliberate move to remove an elected governor and hand over the state to Wike’s ally. The people of Rivers State must resist this injustice."
Civil society organizations and political observers have urged President Tinubu to ensure that due process is followed in resolving the crisis. Some have warned that the appointment of a Wike-aligned military administrator could fuel further unrest rather than restore peace. As tensions continue to rise, all eyes are now on Rivers State, with many questioning whether this development is truly about stability or a political power play orchestrated to favor one camp over the other.
