State Governor Set to Commence Probe on Former Governor's Alleged $10M Spending on State-Owned Newspaper

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced plans to investigate the alleged expenditure of $10 million by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, on the state-owned newspaper, The Nigerian Observer.

During an unscheduled visit to the premises of the newspaper on Tuesday, Okpebholo, accompanied by top government officials, expressed shock upon discovering that the buildings housing the alleged new machines and equipment were inaccessible.

The Observer, once a vibrant media house, was shut down under Obaseki’s administration for a planned revamp aimed at making it competitive with national dailies. However, Okpebholo's findings raised serious concerns over the project’s transparency.

Governor Okpebholo Questions Transparency

Speaking after the inspection, Okpebholo said:

“I visited The Observer newspaper company to see firsthand the impact of the $10 million that was reportedly spent on revamping the state-owned media house before the last elections. However, what I found was shocking—the place was locked, deserted, and non-functional. There were no employees on site, not even a cleaner."

He further stated:

“I need to return for a proper inspection to verify whether the machines and equipment that were supposedly purchased actually exist. If the facility was operational, we should have seen activities and staff working.”

Call for Accountability

The governor emphasized that Edo people deserve transparency and accountability regarding public funds.

“As their governor, it is my duty to provide answers. Edo people need to know what happened to the money allocated for revamping The Observer. This investigation is necessary.”

Okpebholo’s remarks signal the beginning of what could become a major probe into financial dealings under the previous administration. His commitment to transparency and accountability has sparked public interest, with many eagerly awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
