The Enugu State Government is deepening its support for local enterprise and manufacturing through the Enugu MSME & Startup Agency, with the latest intervention targeting King Black, an Enugu-based footwear and leather products enterprise.
Through the Agency’s SME Equipment Grant Programme, King Black is receiving productive equipment aimed at expanding its production capacity, improving product quality and enabling the business to reach wider markets.
The intervention forms part of the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s broader economic development agenda, which places private-sector growth, enterprise development and job creation at the centre of efforts to transform Enugu’s economy.
Governor Mbah’s administration has set a target of growing Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion, alongside a goal of achieving a zero-percent poverty headcount index. These targets have been documented as key components of the state’s economic agenda.
Beyond the immediate support for King Black, the state is also preparing to take a major step in the footwear and leather industry with the planned establishment of a world-class Shoe and Leather Products Cluster in Owo, Nkanu East.
The proposed cluster is expected to provide modern machinery and shared production infrastructure for artisans and businesses operating within the sector, creating an ecosystem where local craftsmanship can be developed into larger-scale manufacturing and commercial opportunities.
For entrepreneurs such as King Black, access to productive equipment can mean more than simply increasing output. It can provide the capacity to improve consistency, meet larger orders, compete in broader markets and potentially create additional employment opportunities.
The intervention therefore reflects a shift from supporting MSMEs solely at the level of survival towards creating the conditions for businesses to produce more, employ more people and compete beyond their immediate markets.

With footwear and leather production identified as an area of potential industrial growth, the planned Owo cluster could further consolidate the sector by bringing artisans, equipment, production and shared infrastructure into a more structured ecosystem.
The initiative adds another dimension to Governor Mbah’s stated vision of building a private-sector-led economy, with the state’s economic strategy focused on industrialisation, innovation, enterprise development and job creation.
