In an era where institutional leaders often succumb to political pressure and vested interests, Professor Simon Uchenna Ortuanya, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has distinguished himself through unwavering commitment to truth and institutional integrity.

Drawing inspiration from Aristotle’s philosophy that character is shaped by consistent actions, Ortuanya’s leadership reflects courage, ethical discipline, and a refusal to compromise academic standards. His handling of the certificate forgery allegations involving former Minister Uche Geoffrey Nnaji stands as a defining example of principled leadership.

The matter began in October 2025 following a Freedom of Information request by Premium Times. In response, Ortuanya disclosed that although Nnaji was admitted in 1981 to study Biological Sciences, there was no official record confirming his graduation or issuance of a degree certificate in 1985. The university’s position was clear: it did not issue the certificate attributed to Nnaji.

This revelation sparked controversy, leading to a lawsuit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1909/2025) filed by Nnaji against the Vice-Chancellor and the institution, alleging unauthorized disclosure and record tampering. Despite mounting pressure and calls from some quarters for him to step aside, Ortuanya remained resolute, refusing to alter or obscure institutional records.

Subsequently, a federal government investigative panel constituted by the Minister of Education reviewed the case. Its findings validated the university’s stance, confirming that Nnaji neither graduated from UNN nor received a legitimate certificate. The institution further reinforced its commitment to transparency by sanctioning an internal official responsible for issuing a conflicting document.

At a court sitting on April 20, 2026, before Justice Hauwa Yilwa Joseph, Nnaji’s legal team indicated interest in an out-of-court settlement, signaling a shift from earlier confrontational positions.

While legal resolution may bring closure, it does not diminish the significance of Ortuanya’s stance. At a time when compromise might have been expedient, he upheld the sanctity of academic records, reinforcing the role of universities as custodians of truth.

Founded on ideals of excellence and integrity, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka holds a historic place in African education. Ortuanya’s leadership underscores the importance of protecting that legacy, emphasizing that academic credentials must reflect genuine achievement, not political convenience.

Ultimately, his actions serve as a broader reminder that educational institutions must remain steadfast in their mission. By defending truth in the face of pressure, Professor Ortuanya has not only safeguarded the credibility of UNN but also set a standard for ethical leadership in Nigeria’s academic and public sectors.
