The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved its entire party leadership structure in Kano State amid strong indications that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move expected to significantly reshape the state’s political landscape.

The dissolution affects all levels of the party’s structure in the state, including the state executive committee, local government executives, and ward officials. The decision was announced by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Oladipo Johnson, following an emergency meeting of the NNPP National Working Committee (NWC).

In a statement issued on Friday, Johnson said the action was taken in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution and that caretaker committees would be constituted to oversee the party’s affairs in Kano on an interim basis.

According to him, the NWC resolved to appoint caretaker committees at the state, local government, and ward levels to ensure continuity and stability within the party pending further directives. He added that details regarding the composition and mandate of the caretaker committees would be communicated to stakeholders in due course.

Johnson also expressed appreciation to the outgoing party officials for their service, commending their contributions to the growth and activities of the NNPP in Kano State.

“The National Working Committee accordingly thanked all those who held positions at the State, Local Government, and Ward structures of the party in Kano State and assured them of the party’s appreciation for their invaluable contributions,” he stated.

The development comes amid reports of a deepening rift between the NNPP’s national leader and former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Governor Yusuf. Political insiders say the governor’s reported plan to defect to the APC has been strongly opposed by Kwankwaso, further widening divisions within the party.

Meanwhile, the Kano State chapter of the APC has confirmed that Governor Yusuf is expected to formally join the party within the next few days, a move that observers believe could alter the balance of political power in the state ahead of future elections.

Analysts view the dissolution of the NNPP’s leadership structures as a pre-emptive step to manage the anticipated transition and maintain party cohesion in the face of growing uncertainty. The caretaker committees are expected to stabilise the party’s operations until new leadership is appointed in accordance with party guidelines.

The NNPP has assured its members and stakeholders in Kano State that further instructions will be issued as the situation unfolds.
