Finally, the wait is over! Enugu Air, the newly launched state-owned airline of Enugu State, has recorded another historic milestone as its inaugural flight from Lagos to Owerri touched down today at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo State. The airline will now operate the Lagos–Owerri and Owerri–Lagos routes daily, Tuesday through Sunday, offering passengers a new choice of comfort, safety, and reliability.
The commencement of the Owerri route follows the airline’s earlier announcement on August 22, 2025, signaling its intention to expand operations into Imo State. Today’s successful touchdown brought excitement among passengers and stakeholders, many of whom expressed satisfaction with the smooth operation, punctuality, and service delivery of the flight.
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah described the expansion as a bold and strategic step in actualizing his vision of transforming Enugu into a central aviation hub in the South-East. According to him, the new route is more than a transport connection , it is a deliberate move to strengthen regional integration, boost commerce, promote tourism, and foster cultural exchange within the South-East and beyond.
“Our mission is clear, Enugu Air is designed to bring our people closer, stimulate economic growth, and offer simpler, more dignified access to home and business opportunities. With this new connection to Owerri, we are building stronger regional ties and laying the foundation for international reach,” the Governor stated.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, commended the milestone, describing the addition of Owerri to Enugu Air’s destinations as proof of the airline’s growth potential and alignment with the Federal Government’s vision of strengthening indigenous airlines. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to providing the necessary regulatory and technical support to ensure the venture’s success.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), which earlier approved Enugu Air’s domestic operations under its partnership with XEJET, confirmed that the Owerri route fully meets all operational and safety standards, further cementing passenger confidence.
The Lagos–Owerri route is expected to significantly enhance connectivity within the South-East corridor, ease travel for residents, stimulate new business opportunities, and serve as a vital link for the diaspora community returning home. With its modern fleet of Embraer aircraft, Enugu Air already operates on the Enugu–Abuja–Lagos golden triangle, and the addition of Owerri marks the latest step in its early expansion strategy. More regional and international routes are projected in the coming months.
Governor Mbah’s quiet but determined redefinition of the Nigerian aviation space is gradually becoming a reality. For many travelers, Enugu Air is already proving to be the preferred choice , a true symbol of comfort, safety, and regional pride.
