Residents of Obukpa community in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State have been thrown into shock after a masquerade, identified with tag number 12, brutally attacked a young lady for refusing to give him money.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred yesterday while the victim was returning from a burial function where her band group had gone to perform. She was reportedly inside a commercial tricycle (keke) when the masquerade and his handlers stopped the vehicle, demanding money from the passengers. Upon her refusal, the masquerade descended on her, inflicting injuries.
The matter has since been reported to the Nsukka Police Area Command, where investigations have commenced. Though the masquerade fled the scene immediately after the attack, the police confirmed that his tag number was recorded.
The Area Commander of Nsukka Division has issued a directive to the traditional ruler, youth leader, and President-General of the community to immediately provide the identity of the masquerade. Failure to do so, according to the police, will lead to the arrest of the community leaders.
The disturbing incident has sparked outrage among residents, with many describing the act as barbaric and a dent on the cultural heritage of the community. Authorities have assured the public that justice will be served and the masquerade apprehended.
