NIGERIA: DEATH OF HANDIWORK, RISE OF POVERTY

Crystal Palace Estate

By Bishop Chinedu Nwoye:

A critical analysis of Nigeria’s socio-economic and political challenges, traces the decline of handiwork, industrialization, and skilled labor to the rise of poverty, crime, and systemic corruption. The prevailing grueling poverty and hopeless in Nigeria did not rise over night. It has its historical roots linked to the mismanagement of resources by past military regimes to the failure of successive governments to prioritize skill development, industrialization, and agriculture.

Over the years, political actors have heaped blames on each other to gain popularity and votes,  without a sincere approach to finding solutions. Below is a roadmap for hope and recovery, emphasizing the need for decisive action, systemic reforms, and a return to values that promote productivity, justice, and national unity.

ROOT OF POVERTY AND HOPELESSNESS:

1. Decline of Handiwork and Industrialization:

o The destruction of industries, factories, and agricultural systems has led to a loss of skilled labor and self-sufficiency.

o The shift from productive sectors like agriculture and manufacturing to import-dependent economies has exacerbated poverty and unemployment.

2. Failure of Leadership:

o Military regimes and corrupt political leaders prioritized personal gain over national development, leading to the collapse of institutions and infrastructure.

o The lack of continuity in governance and the absence of long-term development plans have hindered progress.

3. Rise of Social Vices:

o The decline in legitimate economic opportunities has driven many youths to gambling, ritualism, and violent crimes like kidnapping.

o Nigeria’s global reputation has suffered due to high rates of illegal immigration, unskilled labor, and criminal activities.

4. Erosion of Values:

o The weaponization of ethnic, tribal, and religious sentiments by political actors has deepened divisions and hindered national cohesion.

o Corruption and impunity have become normalized, undermining trust in public institutions.

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS

1. Revitalization of Agriculture and Industry:

o Reclaim farmlands from bandits and invest in modern agricultural technologies like drones.

o Revive industrial zones and support agro-processing to reduce dependency on imports.

2. Skill Development and Education:

o Establish trade and skill schools at local government levels to equip youths with practical skills.

o Reform educational curricula to align with the demands of the job market.

3. Justice and Anti-Corruption Measures:

o Grant full independence to the judiciary and prosecute corrupt judges and politicians.

o Implement strict penalties for kidnapping, violent crimes, and corruption to restore order and deterrence.

4. Support for SMEs and Entrepreneurs:

o Provide mentorship, grants, and funding opportunities for startups and small businesses to stimulate job creation.

5. Mental Health and Governance:

o Evaluate political appointees and elected officials for mental health challenges, as extreme corruption may stem from psychological issues.

o Regulate religious institutions to prevent manipulation and extortion by religious leaders.

6. National Unity and Truth:

o Promote love and truth as foundational values for national cohesion.

o Address and expunge divisive rhetoric that fuels ethnic, tribal, and religious intolerance.

7. Innovation, Science & Technology Incubation

Promote indigenous science and technology

Increase investment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education

Reward creativity and innovation.

Conclusion:

Nigeria is endowed with abundant natural resources, a teaming young population and a resilient people eager to embrace and support the government to succeed. These endowments are uncommon and should be celebrated. Nigeria can regain its greatness through deliberate and collective efforts. An urgent patriotic call for the return to productivity, justice, and accountability must be prioritized. The lasting solutions to Nigeria’s problems lie in systemic reforms, ethical leadership, and a commitment to national development. The vision of a functional and orderly society is achievable if the above proposed measures are implemented with sincerity and urgency.

The current situation in Nigeria calls for an urgent need for a holistic approach to Nigeria’s persistent challenges, combining economic revitalization, social reforms, and ethical governance . It is a call to action for all stakeholders—government, private sector, civil society, and citizens—to work together towards a brighter future for Nigeria.

Nigeria has potent but latent endowments that could turn it to the 8th power in the comity of G7 nations.

I support the relentless efforts for massive industrialization and mass commercialization of vast research data from the research institutes in Nigeria to product developments. It is a welcome development that technology giants from leading brands in Asia , Europe and America are signing new partnerships for factory development and new industries in the Alternative Energy sector like the Green Hydrogen, Bioethanol, Solar PV and Lithium production are arriving in droves to Nigeria.

Thanks to the Honorable Minister of Science and Technology, whose dynamic leadership has repositioned Nigeria as a travel destination by mega technology brands for establishment of new factories and businesses.

Nigeria shall rise again.
