More Crisis As Enugu Community Rejects Igweship Bid Over Eligibility Concerns

The traditional leadership succession in Ishienu Amofu Nkerefi, Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, has taken a dramatic turn as community leaders reject the Igweship aspirations of Chief Michael Christian Ogbonnaya Agwu, citing constitutional violations.

The controversy erupted following a resolution by the Ishienu Amofu People’s Assembly, which declared Chief Agwu ineligible to contest for the position of Igwe, accusing him of failing to meet the 2004 Gazetted Constitution of the community.

Why the Rejection?

At the core of the dispute is a critical eligibility clause in the Ishienu Amofu Nkerefi traditional constitution, which mandates that any aspirant for the Igweship must be married and living with his wife.

During a fact-finding meeting convened by the Igwe Cabinet on March 18, 2025, Chief Agwu reportedly admitted that he had not lived with his wife for over five years and had only recently remarried on February 16, 2025.

This revelation has fueled opposition to his candidacy, with community leaders insisting that the constitution must be upheld.

The Community’s Verdict

In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday, the Chairman of the Ishienu Amofu People’s Assembly, Prince Ifeanyi Ezeoha (Etieokwe Erieokwe), affirmed the group’s stance against Chief Agwu’s bid.

“The constitution of Ishienu Amofu Nkerefi is clear on the requirements for aspiring traditional rulers. Chief Agwu’s own admission confirms his ineligibility, and as such, we cannot recognize his claims to the throne,” the statement read.

The meeting, held at the residence of Chief Reuben Chukwu Onyeabor, was attended by key stakeholders, including:

  • Chief Benedict Ogbu, Secretary of the Igwe Cabinet
  • Mr. Emmanuel Chukwu Onyeabor, Secretary of Ishienu Amofu Nkerefi Community
  • Dr. Sylvester Chukwu
  • Representatives of the Ishienu Amofu People’s Assembly, including Chief Ifeanyi Ezeoha and Chief Chigbo Jacob

Tensions Rise Amid Leadership Struggle

The rejection of Chief Agwu’s candidacy has heightened tensions within the community, with calls for a transparent and constitutional process in selecting a new Igwe.

While Chief Agwu’s supporters argue that his recent marriage qualifies him for the position, the opposing faction maintains that his prolonged period of separation from his wife automatically disqualifies him under the existing constitutional framework.

As the crisis unfolds, all eyes are on the traditional institutions and local authorities to navigate the delicate situation and ensure that the community’s leadership is legitimately and fairly determined.

The coming days are expected to bring further developments as stakeholders deliberate on the way forward in the Igweship tussle of Ishienu Amofu Nkerefi.
