The Enugu Sports Club has conferred the title of Club President on Governor Peter Mbah, recognizing his contributions to sports development and infrastructural progress in the state. The prestigious event, held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, also marked the seamless transition of leadership as Barrister Ifeanyi Nweke was unanimously elected as the new Chairman of the club.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Peter Mbah expressed gratitude for the honor, vowing to uphold the values of the club and support its growth. “Enugu Sports Club plays a crucial role in fostering unity, promoting physical well-being, and creating a platform for intellectual and business interactions. I am committed to supporting its continuous transformation,” the governor assured.
Mbah further reiterated his administration’s dedication to steady power supply, increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and developmental projects in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
The event also featured the official commissioning of the remodeled Enugu Sports Club 1929, a project executed under the leadership of the outgoing chairman, Sir Victor Atuonwu. Governor Mbah commended Atuonwu and his executive team for revamping the clubhouse, describing it as a milestone in the club’s history. In his remarks, Atuonwu appreciated the governor’s immense support, which made the successful completion of the project possible.
He also highlighted key areas that still require attention, including asphalting of the club’s road network, revamping the swimming pool, and expanding outdoor sports facilities. Atuonwu encouraged both members and non-members to register with the club, emphasizing its role in fitness, social networking, and business opportunities.
With the conclusion of Atuonwu’s tenure, Barrister Ifeanyi Nweke was elected unopposed as the new chairman of the Enugu Sports Club. He is expected to deliver his acceptance speech on Sunday, where he will outline his vision for the club and introduce his cabinet for ratification.
The prestigious gathering was attended by several notable personalities, including Former Governor of Enugu State, Barrister Sullivan Chime, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani (Police Service Commission), Former Minister of Information, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Chief Lloyd Ekweremadu Jnr, State Executive Council Members, and prominent club members and patrons. The event marked a new chapter in the history of Enugu Sports Club, reinforcing its role as a center for excellence in sports, leadership, and community development.
