A Magistrate Court in Osogbo, Osun State, has remanded a 56-year-old woman, Adenike Okunrinmeta, in the Ilesa Correctional Facility for allegedly defrauding Azizi Danjuma of ₦25 million under the false pretense of procuring a UK visa.
Okunrinmeta was arraigned before Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara on three counts of fraud and perversion of justice on Monday.
Charges Against the Defendant
According to the charge sheet, between April 2023 and January 2024, Okunrinmeta allegedly obtained ₦25,210,000 from Danjuma, promising to secure a Contract of Sponsor (COS) visa for him.
After the case was reported at the Osun State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), she was arrested and granted bail on November 24, 2024. However, the police alleged that she later refused to make herself available and was subsequently rearrested.
Court Proceedings
The Police Prosecutor, Elisa Olusegun, told the court that the offences committed were contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Laws of Osun State, 2002.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to all three charges.
Her lawyer, Mr. J.P. Jones, prayed the court to grant her bail, arguing that she remains innocent until proven guilty. However, the prosecutor objected, citing her previous failure to honor bail conditions.
Court’s Decision
Magistrate Ayilara adjourned the case till March 26, 2025, for ruling on the bail application and ordered her remand in the Ilesa Correctional Facility.
