In a bid to ensure transparency and assess the level of progress, Hon. John Ogbodo, the Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government, conducted an unscheduled inspection tour today of ongoing construction projects at the Eke Agbani Market and the newly developed abattoir. This visit marks another significant step in Ogbodo’s commitment to improving the infrastructure and living conditions in the local government area.
Upon his arrival at the market, Hon. Ogbodo visited the construction site of the modern ultra-modern abattoir, which he initiated just a few weeks after assuming office. The abattoir is being designed with the aim of replacing the old, unsanitary slaughterhouse, which was widely considered an eyesore, unhygienic, and unfit for the purpose of processing food.
“We are not only upgrading facilities but also prioritizing the health and welfare of our people, especially the butchers and traders who rely on this market for their livelihoods. This new abattoir will provide modern, safe, and hygienic facilities that will improve the entire business operation here,” Ogbodo told journalists during the inspection.
Before the ongoing transformation, the previous abattoir was a constant source of concern, with inadequate facilities that compromised sanitation and safety standards. The new project is expected to offer state-of-the-art amenities to meet the highest standards of food safety and hygiene, including a dedicated borehole for water supply to the abattoir and surrounding areas.
Ogbodo also took the time to inspect another critical facility—the newly constructed convenience block for the market. This facility will house two toilet apartments, one for males and one for females, as well as an overhead water tank powered by a solar-powered borehole. This innovative solution will provide clean and reliable water for the market and the abattoir, tackling longstanding sanitation issues.
“The provision of clean water and proper sanitation facilities is vital for the smooth running of any market. We’re addressing the issue of open defecation that has long plagued this space and ensuring that the market becomes a safer, cleaner, and healthier environment for everyone,” said Ogbodo, highlighting the importance of these projects.
In an interview with the press, Ogbodo reflected on his vision for Nkanu West Local Government and his determination to contribute his quota to the development of the area. Drawing inspiration from the progressive leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, Ogbodo noted that the governor’s relentless drive for infrastructural growth has been a key motivator in his own efforts.
“The infrastructure revolution underway in Enugu State under Governor Peter Mbah is contagious. It inspires us to do more for our people. The progress we’re making here in Nkanu West is part of that larger vision. We are committed to ensuring that our people feel the impact of these developments in their everyday lives,” Ogbodo said.
Ogbodo also shared updates on other ongoing projects in the local government area. The construction of a motor park at Ozalla Four Corners is currently underway. According to Ogbodo, the park’s clearing has already been completed, and a culvert box ring has been installed to ensure easy access for large trucks and trailers.
“This motor park is going to be a major transportation hub for Nkanu West, improving access for both residents and visitors. It will help reduce congestion and improve logistics along the busy expressway, which is essential for business and trade in the region,” Ogbodo explained.
The chairman was accompanied during the inspection by key local government officials, including Deputy Chairman, Hon. Engr. Friday Nnam, the Secretary to the Local Government, Prince Onochie Igwesi, Chief Security Officer, Hon. Ozoemena Nwobodo Agbo, and the Town Engineer, Mrs. Nwobodo, among others.
The collective efforts of the local government functionaries have been central to the execution of these projects, with Ogbodo emphasizing that the government is "poised to do more" for the people of Nkanu West.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to meet the needs of our people. The development we’re witnessing today is just the beginning.
