The Enugu State chapter of the Labour Party has been thrown into turmoil following the suspension of its State Chairman, Barr. Casmir Uchenna Agbo. The decision, made by the State Working Committee (SWC) and Local Government Chairmen, comes after a unanimous vote of no confidence in Agbo's leadership.
In a communiqué issued at the end of a crucial meeting held in Enugu, the party leadership detailed several allegations against Agbo, including insubordination, mismanagement, and alleged unethical conduct. The communiqué, signed by 14 out of the 17 local government chairmen, zonal chairmen, and other key party executives, stated that Agbo had violated the party's core principles, leading to his suspension.
According to the party leaders, the decision to suspend Agbo was prompted by a series of actions that they deemed detrimental to the party’s integrity and growth. These included concerns regarding Agbo’s handling of recent activities, failure to uphold the party’s mission and values, and attacks on the party’s national leader, Mr. Gregory Peter Obi. The communiqué condemned Agbo for his alleged disrespect and personal attacks against Obi, stating that his harsh criticisms were divisive and damaging to the party’s unity.
There were also accusations that Agbo had run the party as a personal enterprise, making unilateral decisions without consulting other members of the leadership. The communique mentioned that Agbo had sidelined elected members and key stakeholders, undermining the party's structure. One of the most serious allegations against Agbo was that he had demanded and accepted bribes from party candidates during the recent local government elections. The communiqué referred to this as a serious breach of party ethics and integrity. Additionally, the leaders accused Agbo of removing and replacing elected executives at various levels—ward, local government, and state—without following due process or consulting with party stakeholders.
As part of the resolution, the leaders of the Labour Party announced the appointment of Chief Kingsley Chideraa Ugwu as the acting chairman of the Enugu State Labour Party. Ugwu will oversee the party’s activities until a congress is held to elect a new permanent chairman. The motion for Ugwu’s appointment was moved by Hon. Chinweuba Ngwu of Enugu South and seconded by Mazi Augustine Umezuluike of Ezeagu Local Government Area.
The communiqué emphasized that the decision to suspend Agbo was made with a heavy heart but was necessary to preserve the party’s reputation and ensure its continued success. It was also noted that the leadership would begin the process of selecting a new chairman who shares the party’s vision and values.
In their statement, the leaders reassured the party’s members and stakeholders that the Labour Party remained committed to its core values and mission. They expressed confidence that the suspension would help refocus the party’s leadership and strengthen its position moving forward. They also called for unity within the party during this transitional period.
