Residents of Amaogudu and Uhuezeoke Okpanku in Aninri Local Government Area, Enugu State, are urgently calling for intervention from both the Enugu and Ebonyi state governments in a long-standing land dispute with their neighboring communities of Akaeze and Uburu in Ebonyi State. The ongoing conflict has led to recurrent violent clashes, resulting in significant loss of life and property.
The most recent attack occurred two days ago, when individuals from Akaeze reportedly launched a surprise assault on Amaogudu Okpanku. The attack left two people injured and led to the destruction of a fuel station and a private school. According to an anonymous local elder, this is just one of many attacks in a dispute that has spanned decades. "Hardly a year passes without Akaeze or Uburu attacking Okpanku from one of the boundaries," the elder explained.
Efforts by local leaders to mediate and resolve the issue peacefully have failed to bring an end to the violence. The continued conflict threatens to destabilize the historically peaceful relations between the communities, who share common cultural ties, traditions, and history.
With the safety of residents now at risk, many are unable to move freely within their neighborhoods, and farming activities have largely been abandoned out of fear of further attacks. The residents are urgently calling on the state governments to take immediate steps to resolve the dispute and restore peace to the region.
Recall that on Saturday, 21st, 2024, Enugu State was thrown into mourning as a woman from Uhube Village in Okpanku Town was allegedly shot dead by suspected youths from Ebonyi State. The incident occurred at her farm, located along the contested boundary between Okpanku in Enugu and Uburu in Ebonyi, a region embroiled in a prolonged dispute over land ownership.
The deceased, a resident of Ihuibe village in Okpanku, was reportedly working on her farm when the attack took place. Eyewitnesses described how a group of youths from Uburu stormed the farm and opened fire on her. Her body was later discovered by locals, who brought her corpse back to the village square.
An anonymous local resident described the situation as one of growing tension and violence between the two neighboring communities. "Uburu people attack farmers who are working on their land. This is not the first time such an attack has happened, and it’s getting worse," the eyewitness lamented.
The boundary dispute between the two communities has persisted for over 15 years, escalating into violent confrontations, with the roots of the issue dating back to the tenure of former Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi. The conflict has involved numerous clashes, with allegations of land encroachments and territorial claims from both sides.
According to local sources, the recent incident marks the fourth fatality in the ongoing dispute, with at least two other individuals left disabled in past attacks. The violence has sparked outrage and concern among residents of Okpanku, who are demanding stronger government intervention to end the bloodshed and resolve the boundary issue once and for all. "This is the fourth person to be killed in this conflict. It's getting out of hand, and people are living in fear," the anonymous source added. "The government needs to step in and end this bloodshed."
The Enugu State Government and local authorities in Aninri have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. However, calls for peace talks and the deployment of security forces to prevent further violence in the area are intensifying.
