…Presidential engagement signals renewed push to expand access to higher education, improve loan delivery and ease financial burdens on Nigerian students

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has met with the Chairman of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr. Jim Ovia, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in a high-level engagement focused on the implementation, performance and potential expansion of the Federal Government’s student loan programme.

The meeting highlights the administration’s continued attention to the student financing initiative, which was introduced to address one of the major challenges confronting access to tertiary education in Nigeria: the difficulty many students and their families face in meeting the cost of higher education.

The discussions centred on the progress of the scheme and efforts to strengthen its delivery, ensuring that eligible students can access financial support to pursue their academic ambitions without being unnecessarily hindered by financial constraints. The engagement also underscores the importance of effective coordination between the Presidency and NELFUND’s leadership in advancing the objectives of the programme.

Ovia, the founder of Zenith Bank and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s financial services sector, was appointed Chairman of the NELFUND Board in April 2024. His role includes providing strategic leadership and oversight as the Fund implements the student loan initiative and works to establish an effective framework for financing eligible students in participating tertiary institutions.

Established as a central component of the Federal Government’s education financing reforms, NELFUND administers loans to eligible students in accredited federal and state tertiary institutions. The scheme is designed to reduce financial barriers to higher education by supporting students who might otherwise struggle to meet approved educational expenses.

Through the initiative, the government seeks to broaden access to university, polytechnic and college education, while giving students from financially constrained households a better opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required to contribute meaningfully to national development.

The presidential meeting comes as NELFUND continues to manage applications, verify student records, coordinate with participating institutions and process disbursements. These operational responsibilities are critical to ensuring that approved beneficiaries receive support efficiently and that institutional requirements are properly addressed.

Improving the application and disbursement processes remains particularly important to the scheme’s success. Effective verification, accurate institutional records, timely processing and clear communication with applicants can help reduce delays, resolve administrative challenges and strengthen public confidence in the programme.

For students and their families, the effectiveness of the initiative is ultimately measured by how reliably the support reaches eligible beneficiaries and helps them remain in school. A well-administered student loan scheme can ease immediate financial pressure, reduce the risk of education being interrupted by financial hardship and provide students with a more secure pathway towards completing their studies.

The engagement also draws attention to the need for sustained institutional collaboration as the programme develops. NELFUND’s ability to deliver on its mandate depends not only on policy direction and board oversight but also on cooperation with tertiary institutions, efficient record management and accessible channels through which students can obtain information and resolve application issues.

President Tinubu’s meeting with Ovia therefore represents an important opportunity to review the programme’s implementation and consider measures that could further improve its reach and effectiveness. Any expansion of the scheme will need to be matched by strong administrative systems, transparent processes and timely support for qualified applicants.

As the Federal Government pursues its education reform agenda, NELFUND remains a key instrument in its efforts to make tertiary education more accessible to Nigerians. The continued engagement between the Presidency and the Fund’s leadership reflects the importance of ensuring that the student loan programme delivers meaningful support to beneficiaries and contributes to the development of Nigeria’s human capital.

Ultimately, the long-term impact of the initiative will depend on its ability to combine wider access with efficient delivery, responsible administration and sustained support for eligible students seeking to achieve their educational goals.
