The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed ₦7,786,400 to 26 students of the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The disbursement, made on July 6, 2026, covers statutory charges for the verified beneficiaries under the Federal Government’s student loan programme, providing additional financial support for students pursuing higher education.
In an acknowledgement letter addressed to the Managing Director of NELFUND, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. James Chukwuma Ogbonna, FAS, confirmed receipt of the payment totaling ₦7,786,400, describing the funds as payment under the Student Loan Programme.
Prof. Ogbonna also disclosed that the university had already commenced refunds to students who had previously paid their fees for the 2025/2026 academic session before the NELFUND payment was received.
The latest intervention means the 26 beneficiaries can have their approved institutional charges supported through the student loan programme, helping to ease the immediate financial burden associated with their education.
The disbursement is another example of NELFUND’s institutional payment mechanism, through which approved school-fee components of student loans are transferred to beneficiary institutions for eligible students.
For SUMAS students, the intervention provides financial relief while enabling the university to process refunds for beneficiaries who had already settled their fees before the loan disbursement.
The development further highlights the role of the NELFUND scheme in supporting students across Nigerian tertiary institutions by addressing approved educational costs and helping eligible beneficiaries continue their academic programmes with renewed hope.
