The National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary election for the Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency was held amid heightened political anticipation and massive grassroots participation, with early results and ongoing ward-level collation placing frontline aspirant, Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, in what observers have described as a commanding and decisive lead.
Although the official result of the primary election is yet to be formally declared by the party’s national electoral committee in accordance with internal party guidelines, reports emerging from various polling centres across the constituency indicate overwhelming support for the renowned philanthropist, administrator, and grassroots mobiliser.
Correspondents and independent observers who monitored the exercise across different wards reported that from the commencement of accreditation to the final stages of vote counting under the transparent Option A4 voting system, Dr. Ezeugwu consistently maintained a significant lead ahead of other contenders.
The atmosphere across Igbo-Eze North and Udenu Local Government Areas reflected what many party faithful described as a renewed determination to enthrone purposeful, accessible, and people-oriented representation at the federal level.
Party stakeholders and delegates who spoke during the exercise expressed confidence in Dr. Ezeugwu’s leadership credentials, citing his longstanding contributions to community development, youth empowerment, educational support initiatives, and humanitarian interventions as major factors responsible for his growing acceptance among party members and constituents.
According to several delegates, the early momentum in favour of Dr. Ezeugwu was not unexpected, as many within the constituency already viewed him as the aspirant with the widest grassroots appeal and the capacity to reposition the constituency through effective legislative representation.
Observers further noted that ward-level reports showed remarkable consistency in voting patterns, with Dr. Ezeugwu reportedly dominating in several polling centres as collation continued across the federal constituency.
Despite the strong early indicators, party officials overseeing the process maintained that the official declaration would only be made by designated national officers of the NDC after the completion of comprehensive collation and verification processes in line with party protocols.
Reacting to the positive trends emerging from the exercise, Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu expressed profound appreciation to delegates, party faithful, stakeholders, and supporters for the confidence reposed in him throughout the primary process.
He reiterated his unwavering commitment to the ideals, programs, and policies of the National Democratic Congress, pledging to provide qualitative, inclusive, and impactful representation that would prioritize the welfare and aspirations of the people of Igbo-Eze North/Udenu Federal Constituency.
Dr. Ezeugwu further emphasized the need for unity within the party, stressing that the primary election should be seen as a collective democratic process aimed at strengthening the party ahead of the general elections.
Political analysts monitoring developments within the constituency noted that although the final declaration remains pending, the current trajectory strongly positions Dr. Ezeugwu as the clear favourite in the race.
They added that the widespread acceptance he enjoys across both local government areas has continued to reinforce perceptions of his candidacy as a rallying point for grassroots political consolidation and progressive representation.
In a related development, the momentum for what supporters describe as “total transformation and responsive leadership” also swept through the state assembly primaries within the area.
Reports from Udenu State Constituency indicate that House of Assembly aspirant, Hon. Hillary Ona, is equally maintaining a comfortable lead in the ongoing primary election, signalling what party loyalists believe could become a sweeping victory for competence, vision, and grassroots political alignment within the constituency.
As party members and residents await the formal announcement from the NDC national leadership, excitement and celebrations have continued to build across communities in Udenu and Igbo-Eze North, where supporters insist that the outcome of the exercise already reflects the collective will and trust of the people.
For many observers, one fact appears increasingly undeniable: Dr. Ikechukwu Ezeugwu and his political team have emerged from the exercise as the dominant force in the constituency, firmly capturing the confidence, support, and hopes of the grassroots ahead of the forthcoming general election.
