According to the statement, the approval followed recommendations submitted after a comprehensive review conducted by a special committee in collaboration with the Office of the Accountant General.

The Zamfara State Government has approved an increase in pension payments for retirees in both the state and local government system, as part of efforts to improve their welfare amid the rising cost of living.

The decision was announced on Tuesday in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mahmud Dantawasa.

The committee examined the conditions of pensioners across the state, with particular focus on retirees receiving lower monthly payments. It found that many pensioners were struggling to cope with current economic realities due to inadequate pension benefits.

The government explained that the adjustment also aligns with the Federal Government’s directive on consequential adjustments tied to the implementation of the National Minimum Wage (Amended) Act 2024.

Under the federal recommendation, pensioners are expected to receive an additional ₦32,000 monthly increase. After assessing its financial capacity, the Zamfara State Government approved full implementation of the increase for pensioners under both the state and local government councils.

The government noted that thousands of retirees are expected to benefit from the new arrangement, which is aimed at cushioning the effects of rising prices of goods and services across the country.

It added that the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal remains committed to improving the welfare of workers and retirees through policies that promote better living conditions and economic stability.

The statement further disclosed that relevant agencies and stakeholders have been directed to ensure the smooth implementation of the new pension structure, enabling beneficiaries to receive payments without delay.

The government emphasized that the policy would not only enhance the wellbeing of retired workers who served the state for many years but also strengthen social welfare support for vulnerable citizens.
