MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has confirmed the death of one of its staff, Mr. Issac Dike, who was electrocuted while on duty in Enugu.
The company’s Head of Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, stating that the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at about 3:25 p.m.
According to the statement, the deceased, a linesman attached to the Ogui District, was involved in an activity yet to be clearly established at a 300KVA/11KV/0.415KV distribution substation located on Giraffe Street, Ekulu East Estate (Zoo Estate), Enugu, when the incident happened.
Ezeh noted that preliminary findings revealed that the staff had gone to the location with a driver assigned to his team. However, the driver reportedly stated that he was unaware of the specific task that took them to the estate, as well as the identity of the customer who allegedly requested the service.
Further checks by the company showed that the deceased did not inform any member of his team about his movement to Ekulu East Estate for official duties.
The company also disclosed that there was no record of any complaint from customers in the area, as verified through its fault report log and Complaint Management System (CMS). Additionally, no approved outage request was recorded for that day, raising suspicions that the activity may have been unauthorised.
Ezeh stated that a detailed investigation has been initiated to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the incident.
“It is unfortunate that we lost him under such circumstances. Our hearts go out to his family, and we pray for the repose of his soul,” he said.
The lifeless body of the deceased was later brought down from the high-tension pole and taken to the Emergency Unit of the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Colliery, where he was confirmed dead.
The incident was subsequently reported at the Abakaliki Road Police Station, Enugu, while his remains have been deposited in the morgue.
