Hon. Pharm. Chika Ugwuoke’s historic bow from office is both rare and commendable, marking him as the third high-caliber appointee to voluntarily step aside under Governor Peter Mbah’s administration. It was first the Special Adviser to the Governor, a foreign national from Germany, who resigned, followed last week by the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, herself the daughter of a former Enugu State Governor, and now Hon. Ugwuoke, the Commissioner for Labour and Employment, has followed suit. In a political climate where many prominent figures are praying and lobbying for such positions, these voluntary resignations by people of means, vision, and capacity suggest that something deeper is unfolding. It is either these individuals are being prepared for something bigger in the future, or they are so deeply committed to their flourishing private ventures that they step back to continue adding value in other ways. Whatever the case, Hon. Ugwuoke’s graceful exit, after delivering value with integrity, further confirms that public service, when done right, can be honourable both in entrance and in exit.

From the outset of his administration, Governor Peter Mbah set a clear vision to recruit young, intelligent leaders with integrity to drive transformative governance in Enugu State. Among those carefully chosen was Hon. Pharm. Chika Ugwuoke, an Oxford-trained, private-sector success who transitioned into public service with humility and commitment.

As Commissioner for Labour and Productivity since 2023, Hon. Ugwuoke played a pivotal role in implementing Governor Mbah’s welfarist agenda, including raising the minimum wage to ₦80,000—making Enugu the second highest in the country—clearing pension arrears, and initiating the digitisation of the ministry. He fostered peace in industrial relations, developed platforms to engage the organised private sector, and launched Enugu’s first unemployment register and labour market information system.

Under his watch, Enugu State recorded its best labour relations ranking nationwide while many youths gained opportunities through skill acquisition and productivity collaborations with local and international agencies.

In a rare act uncommon in Nigerian politics, Hon. Ugwuoke has sought and secured Governor Mbah’s approval to step back from his role due to personal circumstances after two impactful years in office. His decision, approached with dignity, orderliness, and respect for leadership, further reflects his calm, patient, and principled nature.

In a society where politicians cling to power, Hon. Pharm. Chika Ugwuoke’s choice to bow out after delivering value is a refreshing reminder of what true service should look like. His legacy stands as a call for others of integrity and capacity to consider public service, while his exit reaffirms that honour can indeed define leadership.

Enugu State remains grateful, and many eagerly await the next platform from which Hon. Ugwuoke will continue to add value to the state and its people.
