...As Council Mayor, Hon.John Ogbodo Warns Against Blockage of Drainages

In alignment with Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah's transformative agenda to position Enugu State as a premier destination for tourism and ensure environmental safety, the Chairman of Nkanu West Local Government Area, Hon. John Ogbodo, has commenced the demolition of illegal structures on waterways at Ozalla Four Corners Express Junction around the newly planned park development.

The demolition exercise follows the government's earlier directive to property owners and traders who had built structures obstructing water flow to remove them voluntarily. At Ozalla Four Corners Express, many shops were constructed on drainage channels, while others completely blocked the gutters, thereby hindering the free flow of water and increasing the risk of flooding, especially during the rainy season.

Late last year, the Nkanu West Local Government issued warnings urging shop owners to remove these structures in compliance with environmental regulations. While many complied, some ignored the directive, necessitating the enforcement action now being taken.

Speaking shortly after the demolition exercise, Hon. Ogbodo, represented by the Nkanu West LG Town Engineer, Engr. Obichukwu Chime, emphasized the importance of keeping waterways clear. He advised affected shop owners, traders, and landlords to refrain from erecting illegal structures that could block drainage systems in the future. He reiterated that the administration is actively clearing and reopening blocked drainages from Agbani to Ozalla and called on residents to support government efforts by keeping their surroundings free of obstructions.

Hon. Ogbodo expressed appreciation to the shop owners, landlords, traders, and the Ozalla community for their cooperation during the exercise. He reaffirmed his commitment to developing Ozalla Four Corners Park into a modern transport hub, mirroring the high standards set by Governor Peter Mbah in park construction across Enugu State.

The council chairman reiterated that his administration remains dedicated to ensuring environmental safety, urban renewal, and sustainable development at the grassroots, fully in line with the governor’s vision for a cleaner, safer, and more attractive Enugu State.
